Parenting a Senior: It's Your Move Child . . .

Welcome to the first article in my Blog.
In addition to being a Blogger, I am an author of three self-help recovery books that may be viewed and purchased directly from http://www.booksonrelationships.net/ I am also the National Divorce Support Examiner for Examiner.com writing Divorce, dating and parenting articles three times weekly. Those articles are more of an expository nature. Here, however, it is my intent to not only publish informational articles, but creative articles as well be it a poem, sonnet, or whatever comes to mind to drive home the point of different aspects of a relationship. The only disclaimer I make is the notion that I am not committing myself to "having" to post a certain number of articles weekly here.

So, enough said. Let's get started, shall we?

If you have ever read my column on Examiner.com, you already know my daughter is a Senior. Thus, the many articles about parenting a Senior.

Being, naturally, melancholy as the months wind down and we approach graduation, I did some reflecting on the years we have spent together and the other day while cleaning out my office I came across the following handout. As my daughter crosses the threshold into adult hood this verse really hits home. I beam with pride at the reality of who she is and who she is yet to become. From hereon out however, adult hood will present its' fair share of twists and turns and it is up to her to make the best choices for herself while away at college. Mom, of course, will be available for advice long distance.

IT'S YOUR MOVE CHILD . . .

I gave you life but cannot live it for you.

I can teach you things but I cannot make you learn.

I can give you directions but I cannot always be there to lead you.

I can allow you freedom but cannot account for it.

I can take you to church but I cannot make you believe.

I can teach you right from wrong but I can't always decide for you.

I can buy you beautiful clothes but I cannot make you lovely inside.

I can offer you advice but I cannot accept it for you.

I can give you love but I cannot force it upon you.

I can teach you to be a friend but I cannot make you one.

I can teach you to share but I cannot make you unselfish.

I can teach you respect but I can't force you to show honor.

I can grieve about your report card but I cannot doubt your teachers.

I can advise you about friends but I cannot choose them for you.

I can teach you about sex but I cannot keep you pure.

I can tell you the facts of life but I can't build your reputation.

I can tell you about drink but I can't say "No" for you.

I can warn you about drugs but I can't prevent you from using them.

I can tell you about lofty goals but I can't achieve them for you.

I can let you babysit but I can't be responsible for your actions.

I can teach you kindness but I can't force you to be gracious.

I can warn you about sins but I cannot make your morals.

I can love you as a daughter but I cannot place you in God's Family.

I can pray for you but I cannot make you walk with God.

I can teach you about Jesus but I cannot make Him your Saviour.

I can teach you to obey but I cannot make Jesus your Lord.

I can tell you how to live but I cannot give you Eternal Life.

BTW, I read this to my daughter. She smiled and said "I got it mom". Mmm, not really, but she will one day. "O)
